What is World vs World?
World vs World (WvW) is a massive, open-world PvP game mode that opposes three teams against one another. Unlike Structured PvP (which is small-scale 5v5), WvW takes place across four massive maps involving a large number of players simultaneously.
Each map consists of structures that players can capture and defend for their realm to earn score for the ongoing matchup. To attack these structures, players use siege, which can be built using Supplies.
WvW features a completely different Experience system: increasing your WvW Rank gives you Ability Points that let you unlock and upgrade passive bonuses and active abilities that improve your effectiveness in WvW.

Why Play World vs World?
World vs. World (WvW) is a large-scale PvP mode that sets itself apart from other competitive formats in Guild Wars 2. Unlike Structured PvP, which confines players to small arenas and point-capture objectives, WvW offers huge maps, dynamic environments, and multiple playstyles. Whether you enjoy strategic objective control, use siege weapons, or open-field battles, WvW gives you the freedom to choose how you want to fight.
Rewards, Rewards, Rewards!
Participating in WvW grants valuable account rewards, including unique and powerful legendary items.
- Legendary Trinkets:
- Legendary Armor:
- Triumphant Hero's Armor
- Mistforged Triumphant Hero's Armor
Furthermore, playing WvW is mandatory for crafting most legendary items, as the required can only be obtained through its own reward track.
Team Assignment, Accessing WvW Maps and Level Scaling
How Team Assignment Works in WvW
There are two main ways to get assigned to a team in Guild Wars 2 World vs. World (WvW):
-
New or Returning Players: If you’ve never played WvW before, or haven’t played for a long time, you can choose your team in the last tab of the WvW Panel.
-
Active WvW Players: If you’re currently active in WvW, your next team will be based on the battle Guilds you select. These Guilds, often called Alliances, typically use Discord to recruit and organize players.
Team reshuffles happen at the start of every month, so make sure to select your Guild if you want to play with friends. If you don’t choose a Guild, you’ll be automatically grouped with other Guilds on a random server.
Accessing Maps
Once you’re assigned to a team, you can access all WvW maps:
- The five maps on the left side of the home panel let you fight with your team in the Mist War.
- The extra map on the right is for Edge of the Mists, a separate WvW experience.
- Obsidian Sanctum is linked to your current matchup but doesn’t affect Mist War progression.
Level Scaling in WvW
When you enter WvW, your character is automatically boosted to level 80, and your base stats are scaled. However, your gear stats remain unchanged, so if you’re not level 80 and with proper gear, you’ll be at a disadvantage.
Even though your experience bar is replaced by the WvW rank bar, you can still earn to level up your character outside WvW.
Understanding WvW Map Mechanics
When you enter a WvW map in Guild Wars 2, you’ll notice it’s divided into colored territories. Each color represents which team controls the central objective in that area. Holding these objectives can grant your team powerful advantages, such as:
- Stat bonuses
- Gliding access (with Heart of Thorns)
- Ability to reveal enemy players
Capturing Structures
Structures are the core mechanic of WvW. Initially defended by NPCs, they require a coordinated effort to capture:
- Breach Defenses:
- Destroy gates (vulnerable to player attacks and siege weapons)
- Break walls (requires specific siege weapons)
- Defeat the Lord:
- Enter the Lord’s room, defeat the Lord, and stand in the capture circle.
- Secure Control:
- Once captured, your new Lord gains Invulnerability for 5 minutes, ensuring temporary control.
Siege Weapons and Supply
Efficient structure capture relies on siege engines, which are built using supplies from depots. Said depots can be inside the structures themselves, or in stand-alone Supply Camps.
- Supply Camps: The fastest way to get supply. They require no siege to capture and instantly refill their depot once captured.
- Supply Dolyaks: Camps send dolyaks to larger structures, slowly restocking their depots over time.
WvW Scores and Skirmishes
Scoring and Matchups
Team performance in WvW is tracked by a score system, with each matchup lasting one week and running from Friday evening to the following Friday.
- Each matchup is divided into skirmishes that restart every two hours.
- At the end of a skirmish, teams are awarded Victory Points based on their current score; the total Victory Points at the end of the week determine the winner of the matchup. There are several ways to earn score for your team.
So, how do you score points?
- Points Per Tick (PPT): Your team earns points each time you capture a structure, and these objectives continue to generate score periodically for as long as you hold them.
- Points Per Kill (PPK): Every enemy kill adds to your team’s score, many groups focus on setting up fights and organizing strategies specifically for combat engagements.
Main Playstyles in WvW
When you start playing WvW, your activities will typically fall into one of four categories:
- Structure Plays
Focus on capturing and defending objectives to help your team win skirmishes. This includes:
- Organizing structure defenses
- Attacking enemy fortifications
- Disrupting supply lines
- Scouting enemy movements
- Roaming
Roaming is all about small-scale fights in the open field. Roamers prioritize mobility and range, often avoiding large structures. Key aspects include:
- Solo or small-group combat
- Disrupting enemy supply routes
- "Sneaky" captures of smaller objectives
This playstyle feels closer to traditional PvP combat, so adapting your build for speed and survivability is essential.
- Zerg or Blob Fights
Large-scale battles involving 25–50 players in organized squads. These fights rely on:
- Heavy boon application
- Area of Effect Damage
- Specialized builds for support and damage
Guilds and alliances often coordinate during peak hours, compete during peak evening hours, promoting specific builds and strategies to dominate these large engagements under the leadership of a Commander. Find all the builds you'll need for WvW right here!.
- Guild vs. Guild (GvG)
The most competitive WvW activity, featuring structured fights between equal-sized guild groups in arenas or open fields. GvG requires:
- Pre-planned builds and strategies
- Close coordination via Discord in closed groups
- Like Zerg fights, your group will follow and respond to a Commander's calls.
It’s an excellent way to sharpen individual and team skills for all WvW content.
