Being a Guild Wars 2 Beginner in 2025
It's always worth a shotHere at Snowcrows, we house an ever-growing list of builds to accommodate an expanding diversity of playstyles that Guild Wars 2 has evolved to sustain, and maintain guides fit for players veteran, beginner, and everywhere in between. It can be intimidating just trying to pick one when just starting out!
Tackling a decade’s worth of content can seem like a large task, but it's very rewarding, so you’ll want to set yourself up for success! Below, we have a list of what we think are the best beginner builds to gear up to make the best of that experience. But first, we’ll take a look at our criteria for evaluating these builds.
What is a good beginner build?
Why are these builds good?A lot of factors can make a build beginner-friendly, a few of those being:
-
Simplicity of play: Is it a simple playstyle?
-
Low number of inputs: Wrist-breaker or Finger-Snoozer?
-
Utility access: What do you bring to the party?
-
Progression path as a player: I’ve gotten the hang of this. Now what?
And so on. There are many more factors that can make a build the right pick for your experience. For the following list, however, we’ll be mainly focusing on these four factors to give you a general view on why we think these are great builds for you.
Our 5 Best Builds for Guild Wars 2 Beginners:
Builds for all your content needs.Power Dragonhunter
For all your White Knight fantasies.First up on the list we have the fan-favorite Power Dragonhunter as a DPS build. The gameplay loop is simple; it’s all about getting big buffs, then landing a big burst right after, giving you frequent breaks between Cooldowns so you can focus on the fight. This playstyle is applicable to most of the content in the game, and is perfect for learning the flow of Guild Wars 2’s active combat.
As a Guardian Specialization, you also have access to some very strong utility skills which are always useful to your team. These include staples such as:
- as Crowd Control, and against projectiles.
- to protect your allies from Crowd Control.
- to give you and your allies an extra boost.
Power Dragonhunter has a very well-rounded learning curve; beginner players may find themselves playing a simpler setup focused on a single weapon when getting started, while the experts will be engaged meaningfully in demonstrating their skill expression by executing a proper rotation and maximizing their very front-loaded burst. Sound appealing? Here’s a few links to get you going:
- Power Dragonhunter (Spear and Greatsword) if you want to get right into it.
- Beginner Power Dragonhunter if you need to slow down a bit and learn step-by-step.
- Accessible Power Dragonhunter when just looking to maximize simplicity without sacrificing all your damage.
Condition Mechanist
Double the tech, double the trouble.Next up, we have a relatively popular pick in Condition Mechanist. This build, in contrast to our previous entry, specializes in damage-over-time application, or Condition Damage, and does so with the help of a Jade Mech, a mechanical pet-friend that fights alongside you, which ensures that some of your damage is always on the enemy. This makes Condition Mechanist a great build for learning long boss fights, such as some Raids and Strikes, or for drawing enemy attention away from you while tackling Open World or Story content.
Being an Engineer, you have access to some strong active utility such as:
- for Crowd Control.
- , a Mechanist-specific protective field.
- , a powerful panic button.
Condition Mechanist is a good entry point to Engineer, and we feature builds both simple and complex to compliment your growing experience with the class:
-
Condition Mechanist (No Kit) as an accessible and efficient starting build.
-
Condition Mechanist (One Kit) adds a Engineer Kit to increase damage and complexity.
Accessible Power Deadeye
Be the gunslinger you always wanted to be.Accessible Power Deadeye is a deceptively strong pick, boasting great sustained damage at range, which lets you contribute to the fight even if you’re forced away from the enemy. Its gameplay merely requires you to choose a target to Mark, then endlessly bullets at them, making it one of the simplest builds on our website for dealing acceptable damage with little effort.
The simplicity of this setup teaches you very little on how to play the class, but is in turn compensated by having much more opportunity to bring skills like:
- , a staple Thief mobility skill
- for Crowd Control
- against projectiles.
Power Deadeye is home to some of both the simplest and most complex playstyles available in Guild Wars 2, and is excellent at making every weapon choice feel distinctive from the rest. If this appeals to your sensibilities, be sure to check out:
-
Accessible Power Deadeye for a simple experience that lets you focus on the fight.
-
Power Deadeye (Rifle and Daggers) an advanced, more traditional version of Power Deadeye.
Condition Virtuoso
Psychic knives? Sign me up!Condition Virtuoso has been a force to be reckoned with for the past few years, and with good reason. The game plan is simple: apply as much Bleeding as possible to your enemy. This is something nearly every skill on your bar can do, making this a well-performing pick even in the most chaotic scenarios.
A popular pick in no small part due to its low entry-level, this build features one of the most complete kits in the game, sporting incredible survivability, decent sustained damage output, and access to coveted Mesmer class utility, useful in instanced content or casual open world alike. Here’s some examples:
- to transport allies incredibly long distances.
- , a powerful, long-range Disable.
- grants Stealth to up to 10 players .
All in all, Condition Virtuoso’s kit is simple and strong; excellent for beginners. However, it also leaves plenty of room for skill expression, allowing you to stand out among the rest should you invest your time in the class. If endlessly throwing flashy, psychic knives is your jam, check out some of these links:
-
Condition Virtuoso to get right into the good stuff.
-
Beginner Condition Virtuoso to learn at your own pace.
-
Accessible Condition Virtuoso for a relaxed experience focused on reduced effort.
Power Tempest
Become the Storm. Finally, we have Power Tempest to round out our list of great builds for Guild Wars 2 beginners. This build is all about putting the element of Air in the spotlight, and using the other three as “backup dancers”.
Despite having access to all four classical elements, this version of Power Tempest has a very simple flow focuses on creating a big storm via , then resetting its Cooldown with a quick detour to another element, before coming back to cast a big storm again, and repeating the process. This looping nature makes Power Tempest a great build to put a hold on learning a more complex rotation and focus more on the heat of battle.
Elementalist players have access to some flashy utility capable of turning the tides of battle:
- to help pick up allies that have made missteps.
- to instantly traverse great distances.
- , a Tempest-specific skill that can save an entire party from being Downed.
If you ever wanted to be a living, moving Tesla Coil, this is the build for you, and we’re here to help you make it happen:
- Power Tempest so you can hop right into endgame content with this build.
- Beginner Power Tempest if you want to start at the bottom and work your way up.
- Accessible Power Tempest if you want to chill out but still deal damage.
